Well, we can help with that, for starters. Our Matchpoint service connects small businesses with vendors in a wide range of industries. And you don’t have to identify yourself until you’re ready to make a deal.

That said, we know how hard it can be to find inexpensive suppliers for raw materials and office supplies. Buying materials retail can absolutely destroy your profit margins, but your purchase volume might be too low for a direct-from-manufacturer purchase, or even from a wholesale vendor.

Still, we recommend you start your discussion with the primary manufacturer of the supplies you need first. Many manufacturers have begun using the power of the Internet and supply chain management software to make it easier to sell as a wholesaler and cut out their middlemen.

Trade shows might seem like a pain in the neck – why not have these meetings online?! – but they’re a useful way to contact suppliers and negotiate pricing in person.

The Thomas Register, collects and lists manufacturers by categories and geographic area. You might be able to find a local supplier for your materials there. For electronics, Taiwan’s supplier registry and the Alibaba.com international supplier registry might also point you in the right direction.
