H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt and Ceridian are probably the better known tax filing and preparation firms in America, but the tax industry has a long tail of small shops in every city and town. The better known tax preparation companies do not have a monopoly on talent.
Both H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt are discount tax preparation services, which is to say, they’re cheap and offer no frills services. H&R Block has a consulting wing for small business services. Jackson Hewitt, the number two firm behind H&R Block, appears to be in some trouble this tax season – apparently, they’re not going to be able to offer refund anticipation loans to consumer clients because of a problem with their bank.
Beyond those are a host of small shops run by CPAs and tax attorneys. You’re more likely to find specialized services for your industry with an independent firm.
