Introduce yourself. Take a minute, get their attention, state the purpose of the conference and let them know exactly what is on the agenda. Be prepared to repeat this a couple of times. If you have fewer than 10 people on the conference, ask others to introduce themselves as well.
An hour or less. Most people can only sit patiently for about an hour. If you’ve got to go longer, schedule a break.
Don’t waste people’s time. A Web conference is a commitment for the audience. Be prepared. Be succinct.
Keep them engaged. Ask questions. Solicit feedback. Tell a joke or two. Scare them or shock them. But don’t let them sit silently for an hour unless you’re explaining as important as how to managing their life support system after you throw them out an airlock.
Don’t use a cell phone. Find a VOIP system or a landline. The audio is bad enough on VOIP – a cell phone is murder on a Web conference. If you’ve got a phone, shut it off, and ask others to do so.
Test the system first. If you’ve never used the system before, budget at least half an hour of lead time to make sure it will work. If it’s been reliable, take less time, but always check first.
