It took me approximately 3 months to write my business plan. Like any plan, there are hick ups and things that don't always go according to plan. I constantly updated the financial and marketing sections to stay current with out efforts.
It took 4 hours, then there was some homework. We meet once a month and check in and see the progress. I didn't deviate from the plan so much as we revised it as we went along. So, if something wasn't working or it was a waste of time, or I changed my mind and it wasn't important to me, we changed the plan and it was updated and I was given a new copy. What we did is set goals for the year; such as sales, number of jobs, profit, job costs, etc. etc. and then broke each goal into tasks and set goal dates. So the first half of the year a lot of the tasks were completed and I was well on my way to meeting the goals. About half way through the year things had changed so much I had to restructure the plan and set new goals. It worked out really well. I'm hoping for the same results this year. Sales are down, but I'm staying really focused on my tasks and taking advantage of this slow time to get things done and in order. Kind of like, build it and they will come.
