Small Business Glossary and Definitions

What is a Managed Service Provider (MSP)?

A Managed Service Provider (MSP) is a third-party company that provides technology services and support for an organization. As technology has become more complex and organizations more reliant on IT services, an MSP can provide ongoing, 24-hour support and maintenance with an expertise not otherwise available internally.

MSPs often work remotely, supporting the underlying infrastructure as well as the software applications for the organization. An MSP can manage a system more efficiently, provide timely upgrades and service maintenance, and anticipate future needs.

For an employer, MSPs provide a cost-savings with respect to outsourcing the infrastructure, support and operations staff, continuing education necessary to support a changing technology environment, and minimizing business disruptions.
